OdysseyStage Presents: Ona by Keith Burridge
OdysseyStage is proud to present: The World Premier of Ona by Keith Burridge. Ona is based on historical events and tells the story of Ona Judge, Martha Washingtons slave and personal maid, who had the courage and resilience to escape from the President and First Lady. She was never recaptured. Ona is prompted to run upon hearing she is to be Marthas wedding present to her demanding, quick-tempered granddaughter. Most of the play is set in the 1790s in Philadelphia, the US capital at the time. It is a time of uplifting ideals, such as the idea that all men are created equal and yet horrific hypocrisy with many of the same idealists owning slaves. The play views slavery through the eyes of women. It grapples with Onas life before, during and after her escape. The cast includes Monica Hoh as Ona, Kristin Cooper (First Lady of North Carolina) as the original First Lady of the United States, Evit Emerson as Hercules, the Washingtons famous cook who also later escaped from the Washingtons. Other cast members include: Katie Milligan, Isabelle Rose, Jarred Pierce, Daniel Ryder, and Lauren Gaither. The play is directed by Amelia Lumpkin. Design Team includes: John Paul Middlesworth, J.RChel Fowler, Sol Moon Cassidy, Valentina Moya, and Xander Lord. Production Team: Brian Lord, Annie Taft, Juliana Valente, Yvette Holder and Morgan Piner.
